Development of innovation and change capabilities

Creativity, innovation and change are often talked about as subjects in their own right. ABC's view is that products and services are the embodiment of creative processes which invariably involves 'impressive' and 'expressive' stages (1). Naturally, these stages are iterative. Creative leaps can be described as taking place in the mind where we have no direct access to or a feeling we have about something that we have yet to articulate (2). Experience, experimentation, creating an opportunity to expose ourselves to our environment i.e. the opportunity to be 'impressive' and creating space for soak time, reflection, dialogue are all part of the process. At some point, feelings and ideas start to emerge which are attributed meaning on an individual and group basis.

Innovation is an extension of this creative process when creative insights are expressed and manifested materially into something. To enable individual creativity and learning to be diffused and shaped, simple practices for encouraging flow and self-organisation can be effectively applied. These practices such as Open Space and Action Learning can be easily adopted by individuals and groups and woven into the fabric of their day to day thus helping to create collective capabilities over time.
